Canadian Society for Traditional Music Conference May 10–11, 2024
A Conference in the Round: Collaborative Dialogues for Ethnomusicology
Submissions Due: April 12, 2024
The annual conference of the Canadian Society for Traditional Music will be held virtually from May 10–11, 2024. By employing a fully online format for this year’s conference, we are following other scholarly societies, in the aim of increasing and diversifying participation, exploring new forms of scholarly communication, and reducing the carbon footprint of our operations.
The forthcoming conference – A Conference in the Round: Collaborative Dialogues for Ethnomusicology – is inspired by the successful Dialogues hosted in 2021 by ICTMD/CSTM. It is envisaged as a series of roundtables on current, critical themes such as: Archival Listening; Representing Language in and throughout ethnomusicological scholarship; and the Current State (or “états des lieux”) of Ethnomusicology in Canada. We also encourage potential presenters to consider the themes for the 2025 ICTMD World Conference, or suggest other themes for lively roundtable discussion.
Applicants may submit as a group for an organized roundtable with a common theme. The committee will group independent submissions to create novel conversations and fruitful dialogue.
Please send a 100- to 200-word abstract for your proposed roundtable. In the abstract, use the first paragraph (50-75 words) to suggest a broader topic that may interest the society. Use the second paragraph to describe how this topic is formed and addressed in your own specific research world (50-100 words). Make sure to describe how the theme in your proposal will lend itself to the roundtable format (several 5 to 10 minute papers followed by group discussion). By using the roundtable model, the hope is for inclusive and engaging dialogues on current, emergent, and future issues in the worlds of ethnomusicology.
Submissions will go through the peer review process with special attention to creating dialogues between all members of our society–students, faculty, community knowledge holders and musicians. By using the roundtable model, the hope is for inclusive and engaging dialogues on current, emergent, and future issues in the worlds of ethnomusicology.
